Cerebral blood flow autoregulation: effect of hypercapnia on cerebral tissue gas concentrations.

چکیده
In clinical medicine many conditions are encountered which adversely affect the oxygenation and perfusion of the cerebral cortex. Shock, sepsis, and posttraumatic pulmonary insufficiency or adult respiratory distress syndrome are frequently encountered complications of major surgical illness. Prolonged cerebral hypoxia may result in diffuse cerebral damage while other organ systems remain viable. Cerebral oxygen consumption remains relatively constant in conditions of arterial hypoxemia but cerebral utilization of glucose rises sharply. With hypoxia moderate changes in arterialp0, do not cause significant changes in cerebral blood flow; but more severe hypoxia results in increased blood flow. Hypercapnia causes a profound increase in cerebral blood flow and markedly improves task performance of humans exposed to acute ambient hypoxia [3]. The

Role of Nitric Oxide and ATP-Sensitive K+ Channels in Regulation of Basal Blood Flow and Hypercapnic Vasodilatation of Cerebral Blood Vessels in Rabbit
Background: The mechanisms underlying cerebral hypercapnic vasodilatation are not fully understood. Objective: To investigate the role of nitric oxide (NO) and ATP-sensitive potassium (KATP) channels in basal blood flow regulation and hypercapnia-induced vasodilatation in rabbit cerebral blood vessels. Methods: The change in cerebral blood flow was measured by a laser Doppler flowmeter in 18 Ne...

The mechanisms underlying cerebral vasodilatation during hypercapnia are not fully understood. To examine the role of nerves and prostaglandins in the regulation of basal blood flow and in hypercapnia-induced vasodilatation in the cerebral blood vessels of rabbit.Cerebral blood flow was measured by laser Doppler flow-meter in 18 NZW rabbits anesthetized with sodium pentobarbital. Tetrodetoxin ...
متن کاملThe effect of an acute increase in central blood volume on the response of cerebral blood flow to acute hypotension.
The purpose of the present study was to examine whether the response of cerebral blood flow to an acute change in perfusion pressure is modified by an acute increase in central blood volume. Nine young, healthy subjects voluntarily participated in this study. To measure dynamic cerebral autoregulation during normocapnic and hypercapnic (5%) conditions, the change in middle cerebral artery mean ...
متن کاملGraded hypercapnia and cerebral autoregulation during sevoflurane or propofol anesthesia.
BACKGROUND Hypercapnia abolishes cerebral autoregulation, but little is known about the interaction between hypercapnia and autoregulation during general anesthesia. With normocapnia, sevoflurane (up to 1.5 minimum alveolar concentration) and propofol do not impair cerebral autoregulation. This study aimed to document the level of hypercapnia required to impair cerebral autoregulation during pr...
متن کاملInfluence of CO2 on neurovascular coupling: interaction with dynamic cerebral autoregulation and cerebrovascular reactivity
Abstract PaCO2 affects cerebral blood flow (CBF) and its regulatory mechanisms, but the interaction between neurovascular coupling (NVC), cerebral autoregulation (CA), and cerebrovascular reactivity to CO2 (CVR), in response to hypercapnia, is not known. Recordings of cerebral blood flow velocity (CBFv), blood pressure (BP), heart rate, and end-tidal CO2 (EtCO2) were performed in 18 subjects du...
